I'll have a look at it. I have already seen several reports like yours.
There seems to be a problem with s3cmd package on Ubuntu 8.10. In the
meantime I suggest you download and install the source from:
http://s3tools.logix.cz/download

BTW are you running i386 or amd64 version of Ubuntu?
