The dos2unix and unix2dos can be replaced (on UNIX) by
awk '{print $0 "\r"}' < tcnv.unix > tcnv.dos
awk 'BEGIN{RS="\r\n"}{print $0}' < tcnv.dos > tcnv.unix
where it is possibly better to use \015 for \r and \012 for \n.
Note multi-byte $RS is "unspecified", but the above works with
gawk, mawk, nawk and busybox awk (v1.36.0.git).
