Disclaimer: i never used IMAP as an employee or whatever,
i installed a local dovecot and went ahead, only with S-nail and
Heirloom mailx, so i have _no idea_ what other MUAs do to hide (or
don't hide) the IMAP standard "INBOX". My test account now has

   set folder=imap://user1@localhost/Mail
   set inbox=+

And that ends up in INBOX, i think this is right? I haven't read
the standard entirely (in fact only a few sections), though.
If i say

   set folder=imap://user1@localhost/Mail/
   set inbox=+du

then we end up in Mail/du, which is definetely right.
Ok, for completeness sake, let's look back:

  ?0[steffen@wales ]$ MAILRC=/dev/null heirloom-mailx -n \
    -Spassword-user1@localhost=pass1 -Suser=user1 \
    -Sfolder=imap://user1@localhost/Mail
  No mail at imap://user1@localhost/INBOX
  ?0[steffen@wales ]$ MAILRC=/dev/null heirloom-mailx -n \
    -Spassword-user1@localhost=pass1 -Suser=user1 \
    -Sfolder=imap://user1@localhost/Mail/
  No mail at imap://user1@localhost/INBOX

«We can do better than that». I'm afraid you hear these words
quite often these days...

 |Right, I see. "Obsoletion" seems odd for a feature that has never

At your service.

 |in "%"' is somewhat obscure. It might be better to say something on the
 |lines of "Imap INBOX must be set explicitly using the 'inbox' variable".

I will remember this when i really make the great and are capable
to reinstantiate IMAP support in v14.9. (I hope no more v14.8.x
update is to follow that is to say.)

oh yes, alpine... A long way to go.
Ciao, Captain America. ^.^
