Thanks, Steffen.  I want to say that I do appreciate the work you are 
doing.  My reference to mailx was just meant to be a suggestion that the 
code there might give a pointer to how this case should be handled.

The problem appears to lie with the /Mail at the end of the folder 
definition. It was put there on the instruction of a support person a 
long time ago, and since it worked with both mailx and pine, I never 
thought to question it.  I have a different account elsewhere whose 
folder definition is just
set folder=imaps://username@servername
with no trailing directory name, and s-nail handles that correctly, 
opening my INBOX on the mail server.
