This didn't work properly on NetBSD, but the reason has been found
and been pushed to [master].  (Very large value used as argument
to snprintf(3) to indicate "the buffer _is_ large enough", but
that is not POSIX compliant.  I think this behaviour is no good
unless the _return value_ would exceed this limit.  If at all
(POSIX has ssize_t, but ok, this is also ISO C unless i'm
mistaken).)
