I cannot reproduce this with v14.4.5 (OpenBSD, Bitrig) and v14.5.2
(the others), unless only the first mail is unread :)?

Sorry, but this behaviour is specified by POSIX [1].
The only (most likely optional) change i plan for the `top'
command is mentioned in `TODO':

  The "top" command should honour ignoretab, or there should be
  a very special "top" ignoretab.  It simply doesn't make sense to
  "top" 5 lines when all that you get are Received: lines...
