I seem to remember something similar when I was installing it on Karmic ages ago. If you go look in the mkmf.log that it talks about (can't remember where it is located) it indicates what the problem was. Mine was to do with other libs that needed to be installed. Things like build-essentials. Also, once you get the exact error message from the log file, you can usually google that to get a more specific idea of how to resolve the problem.

paperclip and a few other perl scripts I have (which uses
Image::Magick).
