Although `helper.asset_paths.compute_public_path` is publicly available, it won't actually return the right value for the asset. It is used by helpers like `image_tag`, but `sprockets` is actually overriding these methods. I'm probably not being super clear. In any case, it makes it very difficult to know what's going on, and very hard to add your own type of asset, as I'm doing in my gem `swf_fu`.
