I am very hesitant to do a new devel release before my vacation.
Especially with late additions there are chances that things break and my
folks would really not like me to do that in front of a long vacation. So
it's most probably end of August.
I have implemented the functionality. It currently is available in the
master-localvars git branch:

It would be great if you could give it a try. Doc is still missing, but
basically
$!var1!var2 is message property while
$.var1!vars is local variable
So dot instead of bang immediately after the $ sign means local var.
I'll probably merge to master (but not officially release) when the doc is
done.
