That post says the patch was added in rsync in August 2013, so that should be included in the 3.1.1pre1 of end of January. Looking through the git changelog since 3.1.1pre1 I see very few fixes other than installation-wise. 10450 (which seems just a progress indicator), and some slashes/relative-dir fixes. I'll try latest git nonetheless. Note, by the way, that I am not using --inplace. I see I didn't mention the exact rsync line I used (only part of it is visible in 'ps').
