Gparted should be perfectly fine. As for the FS type, EXT3/4 should be fine for an external drive, although everyone has their favorite.

    You _did_ format the external disk with a filesystem that understands
    hardlinks, yes? Such disks usually come preformatted with FAT which
    doesn't support many Unix concepts.

Good point! What's the recommended filesystem? Which tool do you suggest
for reformatting, is GParted ok?
