This is now fixed in the latest 3.1.0dev version in the git repository and
"nightly" tar file.
I also removed the code that could hang from the 3.0.x branch, but the fix for
the I/O error notification issue (that the hanging code was targeting) will now
be handled only in the 3.1.0 release.
