See the mail archives for prior discussions on compressed files for a reference to a patch that can be used for this (though I don't recommend it, as it removes size checking from the transfer quick-check). Another way to get backups compressed is to use the BackupPC application, which speaks the rsync protocol and stores the backup data with all redundancy removed and files compressed.
