I'm trying to imagine how that would be useful because one of the things
that the options do is to control how the destination hierarchy is

useful combination I can come up with would be using --compare-dest for
the first arg, indicating that you want a sparse destination, and then
link-dest for the rest of the args, indicating that you want to try to
hard-link changed files to prior versions when a change occurs. Do you
have any other combination of options in mind?

For one, I think any combination of --copy-dest and --link-dest makes
sense, because you might have lots of directories with old files that
might as well be used to speed the transfer and it might be acceptable
to hard-link unchanged files from some of those directories but not
others.
