That seems reasonable. However, I think the user should have the option to itemize with respect to the destination if he/she meant the basis dir only as an optimization. Furthermore, I'm not convinced itemizing with respect to a basis dir is useful unless it handles non-regular files, including directories; this would help with Christian's backup scenario.
