In addition to what JBG suggested, I'd also suggest using -vv to see what command is being run to contact the remote host so you can see if it is using the right remote shell. The default is chosen at compile time and can be overridden by setting RSYNC_RSH in the environment. If it is not what you expect, set it by exporting the right value in RSYNC_RSH.
