First, don't have just one backup copy.  Second, use a RAID
type that provides redundancy to survive a disk dying.
Third, if you won't have multiple backup trees you could use
the --max-delete option.  Finally, you might want to upgrade
although that in itself wouldn't avoid the problem of
syncing from an absent disk.
