We had a lot of bad luck with that kernel (suse 7.3 right?) -- but it
was mainly resierfs/nfs issues (links garbled, nfs hangs, filesystem
issues). We couldn't use that kernel on any of our active production
boxes. 

I'd suggest trying a newer kernel. 2.4.18 has been a pretty good one.
