I don't think the files/directories are ignored just excluded from being 
rsync.  It may create the dirs, but mine are all empty.
Anonftpsync is a shell script that calls rsync.  It has worked rather well 
for me.

Realize that this script although generic is intended to mirror debian ftp 
servers by using rsync.  It checks for a lock file to make sure a previous 
rsync is not still running and it creates a new log file for every run.

I did not write the script I just use it.  It is part of the debian gnu 
distribution and my understanding is that it is open source.  The url for 
the script is

It is heavily commented and is only 66 lines.  Only about 36 are used.  If 
you read the whole script, you will get the idea.  Add my exclude (plus a 
tweak or 2) and you will be mirroring the stable, testing and unstable i386 
files.
