To answer that question: No. Installing the CVS on both systems results in
rsync just not working. The report is:

# rsync -e ssh -avv -n somedomain.com:/dir/path/ /dir/path/
ssh: somedomain.com:/dir/path/: Name or service not known
unexpected EOF in read_timeout

Note that going back to stock 2.4.6 and resubmitting the same command
results in a successful transfer - except for of course being able to
transfer a subdirectory without its contents.

I assume that somewhere between 2.4.6 and the current CVS the exclude
function was fixed to work as Martin reports, and something else was broken.
And I should wait on the next release to get functionality on this?
