[Update of off-list solution for benefit of list archives.] The problem was the RRDcached version.
rrdcached version 1.4.7 only supports the fetch, graph, update rrd functions. You need to have the trunk version 1.4.999x in order to have the more complete support from rrdcached. Otherwise, it falls back to using non-cached mode.
