1) Define "large spike". If the spike is below 1 Gbps it could be a real spike actually occuring on your network ... 2) Make sure you've set proper min and max values; use rrdtool tune to check and, if necessary, correct this Existing spikes that are a result of missing max values can be removed by setting the max value, dumping the database then restoring it again with the -r flag. If (1) is the case then there's nothing you can do about it without masking the thruth from the viewer. It is reality in that case. If you *really*need* to lye then you could use --upper-limit and --rigid to set a fixed, low enough, maximum to the image -or- you could do the CDEF magic as described in the tutorial.
