Note that process_revents() must be called at somewhat frequent intervals (there is example code to do so in the documentation http://rpy.sourceforge.net/rpy2/doc-dev/html/rinterface.html#processing-interactive-events ). This does appear to make it work here. Let us know if this is not improving the situation.
