Yes, this flag is enabled. (I should have starded with all R configure 
options provided, I suppose :D  I've used only the two: 
--prefix=/home/sebzur/R_2.8.1 and --enable-R-shlib)

Without --enable-R-shlib rpy2 does not compile.

$ ls /home/sebzur/R_2.8.1/lib/R/lib
libRblas.so  libRlapack.so  libR.so
and libR is apparently there.
