Here's why. Look at the string that python is constructing when you do:
>>> r("paste('y', 'x', sep="")")
'y x'
The string is:
>>> "paste('y', 'x', sep="")"
"paste('y', 'x', sep=)"
which is valid R syntax, and gives you the default sep, which is....
space!
Moral: watch your quotes.
