Summary: RPy build fails on Mac OS X Intel

Initial Comment:
When I try to build RPy on an Intel Mac OS X 10.4 I get the following error:
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
lipo: can't open input file: /var/tmp//ccAy7y6A.out (No such file or
directory)
error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1

A search revealed this is a common problem in building universal
binaries, and I found this TechNote from Apple:
http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2005/tn2137.html

Has anybody solved this problem? What do I need to change to
successfully build RPy on the Intel Mac?

Thanks for any help!
