Oh, hmm. We could, but the static uses here relate to C era and are something
we want to backport to 4.x as bugfixes, especially "backends" is such a generic
name that symbol clash potential is real.
But I guess going forward anonymous namespaces should be favored - this was my
first encounter with them, I remember reading about it somewhere ... along with
those other 500 other seemingly obscure C++ details :sweat_smile:
