I finally got around to looking into that one. I can find nothing to
fix. If I Composition -> Change Composition Start and End and change
the end marker to be 10, I get a MIDI file that ends at bar 10.

If I draw a segment 20 bars long and fill it with notes, set the end
marker to 5, I get a MIDI file that ends at bar 5.

There is no problem with files defaulting to 100 bars that I can find,
and I see nothing at all in the code that could explain why that would
happen either.

This is probably user error.

Another possibility is that there are various things you can do to
extend the composition end marker, such as recording or drawing past
that marker. It's fairly easy to extend a composition by mistake, and
this has always been kind of touchy. We err on the side of never having
you suffer the old brick wall days where if you kept drawing or playing
past that marker, your creativity got smacked in the face.

Being able to extend the end marker by accident is mildly annoying, but
it's easy to deal with. Before exporting, printing, or anything else
that requires a precise end marker, just double check and make sure it's
set where you want it. The setting does hold across reloads if you're
careful not to bump it, and bumping it is indeed rather easy. I've just
gotten in the habit of checking this over the years, and I always check
before printing or exporting in a case where the overall length really
matters.

That could be your problem. Anyway, whether it is or isn't, I've done
as much as I can do with this myself.
