I always use the matrix for percussion, and now that I'm thinking about 
it, this really seems like the only reasonable choice Rosegarden offers.

The problem you're running into is the same thing you encounter notating 
something like a guitar part with sustained bass notes mixed with 
arpeggios.  You can't do that, or any other scenario involving polyphony 
on the same staff, in one segment and have Rosegarden make anything 
sensible out of it.  You have to use one segment for the bass notes, and 
another for the remaining notes.  The segments can be overlapping on the 
same track to get them on the same staff, but they must remain 
completely separate from each other, and it can all be a rather big pain 
to manage.

Considering percussion is nothing but a solid wall of polyphony on the 
same staff, trying to juggle all that in the notation editor would be 
pure misery, and I wouldn't recommend bothering.
