Well, I would say that the value of 75 patterns depends on the measuring
time for each of them.
Routine patterns may need only 30mn with a monodetector
machine, but a minimum quality pattern will need 12 hours.
I think that the highest quality pattern needs up to 3 or even
6 days in order to obtain that minimal FWHM ~0.04° 2theta
by using an in-laboratory instrument equipped with a
monodetector and good slits. If I take the average 3days
x 75 = 225 days of use of an instrument which costs
near of 120000 US $, consumes power, needs to change
some pieces, and sometimes is used to do research...
Anyway, this is a way to do it. The other way being that
researchers send their patterns for free, and get the PDF-2
database for free too. This would really allow people to
believe that ICDD is a "not for profit organization". Then,
the URL would be http://www.icdd.org/ and not
http://www.icdd.com/.
