If you want to avoid having to manually compile/install erlang
to upgrade you can use the mcg ppa:

 

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mcg/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

 

Was just dealing with this myself earlier this week.

The Riak Erlang Client requires Erlang R13B04 or above. Can
you upgrade your version of Erlang and try building again?
