For anyone interested in this feature I've updated my scripts and tested on my database without much trouble. Of my 16497 unique files in my last.fmdump I merged the play count with 14000 files.
Because the script takes the last.fm dump as correct there will have been misspelt tags and deleted files that would explain the drop. https://github.com/lachlan-00/rb-mergeplays I might work on things a bit more but an 85% hit on questionable data seems about right to me for now.
