I've just merged John Iacona's context pane plugin (a Google Summer of Code project) into git master. This adds a side pane displaying album and artist information sourced from last.fm.
If you'd like to try it out, you need to install a few python modules: PyWebKitGtk (python-webkit on debian/ubuntu, pywebkitgtk on fedora) and the Mako template system (python-mako on debian/ubuntu and fedora) and you need to ensure you have a last.fm username configured. You don't actually need to have the last.fm plugin enabled or be actively using last.fm in any way. My thanks to John for his work on this project, and of course to Google and the GNOME summer of code admins.
