That's what we'd need to use to do this, there has been some discussion in bugzilla about the details of how to do it. As with (unfortunately) so many things, this needs someone to work on it and it never quite gets to the top of the to-do pile for any of the core developers. It isn't a trivial amount of work, and there are some complicated bits to deal with for it to work correctly, but basic cross-fading shouldn't be *that* hard.
