    The micro-benchmark definitely shows the alternative code is faster, 
although it only benchmarks the time taken in this one method. The question is 
how much of the overall time is consumed by a simple array length check. Your 
first test is more convincing, although the difference seems quite a bit larger 
than I'd expect. Wow, does it really get called so much / the native overhead 
is that big?
