Markdown is worth the sacrifice to some, and not to others. Given that browsers don't provide any API for spell checking, there's little that the text widget we use can do here. We had to decide on a trade-off for 2.0, in order to open the doors for better commenting and for some upcoming features, like embedded file attachments in comments.
2.0.12 will have the ability to disable Markdown by default for your user, or to toggle it on/off for individual fields. We're still testing it, but it's otherwise fully implemented in our Git repository.
