We already have such a place - the Attic. All releases that are unsupported get moved to the Attic. This happens more often for projects whose releases take up a large amount of space, so it's quite possible that projects with just a single source tarball still have tarballs that are quite old under either stable/ or unstable/ Moving things to the Attic is fortunately a reasonably cheap operation.
