If it works as a libvte replacement (and reasonably stable) then I think it should be default in RTL environments. However, IMO removal of libvte upon installation is not required. I think both can live together using the Debian Alternatives System. libvte should be available with a lower priority in the Alternatives list, which will make MLTerm default when installed.
