I presume I don't have vinagre in background (no such thread), and I still have the problem of high CPU usage from g-s-m. I also notice the same behaviour with the last version of the xfce cpu monitor released with xubuntu maverick. Here again, there is an new graph added, showing the CPU consumption. What a coincidence !! Maybe g-s-m is not the responsible directly, but the library used for printing the graph, or an another common function with xfce4-taskmanager ?
