Following an IRC discussion with Marc, I tested the fuse packages from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security-proposed/+archive/ppa. They fixed the hang when using auditd for me. I also tested around with various GVFS backends (ssh, FTP, SMB), and they worked as expected. +1 from me, thanks Marc for the fix.
