Mike, 

I do not beleive you have to recompile samba to get winbind working. You
need to ensure that all the samba RPM's are installed. Once these are installed
to get winbind working requires the configuration changes within files i.e
/etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/smb/system-auth files.

I hope this starts to help? without further information i cannot tell what
you would require in the files mentioned.
