You can back up mbox and maildir files with any backup utility you
like...even tar. Whether or not you can backup up a quiescent mail queue
will probably depend on the MTA you're running. You can't do it at all
with qmail, but you might be able to do it with sendmail or postfix after
you've stopped the MTA.
