Thanks for the reply Tom. I hadn't checked that but the user in question
(myself) has UID 500 in both.

Although I'm still getting the 'Access Denied' happening - at least I've
been able to print using the Windows XP native Stylus 860 driver (The
printer is an 880). It seems to work. It must be something to do with that
damn status monitor for the 880 driver which I can't fully turn off.
