This does not really pertain to copying live disks, but rather broken ones (s/o grepping the archives might stumble over it that way): http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/ It's a tool similar to 'dd' which does the Right Thing when encountering unreadable spots in the input.
