hmmm. Can you post the exact error you get? also taking a look at dmesg 
and /var/log/messages for other pertinent info? Almost sounds like you 
could have a cabling problem. are there two NIC's in this box? usually 
onenic would be eth0, which is why i ask.

lastly, on my comcast setup, I can statically bind an address that was 
assigned via DHCP. in other words, if i just plug in the winders box to 
the cable modem, get the address from DHCP, unplug the windows box, i 
can manually ifconfig it to the linux box and it works. See if that 
works for you also, but I think you have cabling issues.
