Open an xterm  so that you will be able to start gmc after nautilus is
stopped. Then stop nautilus:

  Foot -> Settings -> Session -> Session Properties

  Select nautilus, then click the Remove button in the top right corner of
  the dialog. Click OK.

In the xterm, start gmc:

  gmc &
