You don't need to format the partition; just set its type to swap in 
fdisk. 

You can have more than one swap partition defined in /etc/fstab, and you 
cal leave the defaults alone. The 0's are the fsck priority and dump 
flags; man fstab for more info.

You can also just create a swapfile on an existing partition and enable it 
with swapon if you're looking for a less drastic solution.
