My common response to this is:
        How many would you like?

You can have as many files in a directory as you like. The only limits
are: 1) disk space, and 2) the number of inodes created when the fileystem
was made.

Which is not to say its a good idea to have huge numbers of entries in 
a directory, you'll find yourself paying a performance  price when the
numbers get large. And No, I don't think we can be specific about what
"large" means.
