Thanks for the verification. Nice to know I'm not going crazy. And you were correct the installer wouldn't give me the modem he wanted to install it himself.
The installer and everybody I have spoken with at the provider swears the internal modem they provide just won't work on a 486. My guess is that is because most 486 motherboards didn't have PCI interfaces in them and the modem is PCI. I have side stepped the modem issue by buying an external ADSL modem and will connect it to the firewall using a network card. Then the real fun begins trying to get the information I need from them to make the connection work.
