The topic you're asking about is quite a weighty as you, no doubt, are 
finding out.  One bit of advice I'd provide from my experience with 
Netbackup and being responsible for a corporate datacenter as welll as a 
corporate IT infrastructure.  As simple as it sounds, please ask the 
question, "what is the reason/purpose for backing up".  I've found over 
the two years since I took this on, the original justification was not 
well thought out or more likely implemented.  Once you answer that 
question, then you can narrow down how much disk space you will be 
managing (backing up) and how long you will need to archive backup images 
and the need (or not) for offsite storage.  DLT is a good format to 
choose.  Decent size to work with (physical), good capacity,  drive 
technology seems to be robust.
